Jerry Siegel was drafted into World War II quite late and was assigned a job writing for the military newspaper Stars and Stripes. While he was away, the owners of Superman took his pitch for a “Superboy”–in Siegel’s conception, Superman as a juvenile prankster– and made him into a hero to compete with rival Fawcett Publications’ Captain Marvel Jr. Only Superman’s owners didn’t tell Jerry what they were doing.
